A McLaren Vale Gem from One of South Australia's Most Passionate Family Estates

My Wine Man on Penny's Hill

Penny's Hill is one of McLaren Vale's most celebrated and passionate family-owned estates, founded in 1988 by Tony and Susie Parkinson with a singular vision: to produce wines of genuine quality and character that reflect the unique terroir of McLaren Vale. The estate's flagship Edwards Road Cabernet Sauvignon is named after the historic road that borders the vineyard — a wine that has consistently demonstrated McLaren Vale's remarkable ability to produce Cabernet of depth, elegance, and longevity. Farmed with meticulous attention to detail, the Edwards Road vineyard benefits from McLaren Vale's distinctive combination of ancient soils, Mediterranean climate, and cooling sea breezes from the Gulf St Vincent — conditions that produce Cabernet of extraordinary concentration and natural structure. The 2014 vintage was one of the finest in McLaren Vale's recent history, delivering a long, cool growing season that allowed the fruit to develop exceptional flavour complexity and natural acidity.

Tasting Notes

Deep ruby-crimson with a purple hue. The bouquet is fragrant and inviting — blackcurrant, dark cherry, and cassis layered with cedar, dried herb, and a whisper of well-integrated oak. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied with firm, fine-grained tannins and a vibrant natural acidity that gives the wine excellent structure and length. Flavours of blackcurrant, plum, and dark berry flow through to a long, savoury, and elegantly persistent finish with notes of tobacco leaf and dried herbs. A classic McLaren Vale Cabernet that has developed beautifully with a decade of bottle age.

Style & Drinking Window

Medium to full-bodied with a classic Cabernet structure of firm tannins and bright acidity, the 2014 Edwards Road is now entering its prime drinking window after a decade of cellaring. The tannins have softened into a fine, integrated frame that carries the wine's fruit concentration with elegance and precision. Drink now through 2030. Decant for 45–60 minutes to allow the full aromatic complexity to unfold. Serve at 17–19°C.

Food Pairing

The firm tannins, blackcurrant depth, and savoury herb complexity of the 2014 Penny's Hill Edwards Road Cabernet Sauvignon make it a superb match for Butterflied Lamb Leg with Rosemary and Garlic from My Meat Man

Why This Is a Smart Buy

At HK$188, the 2014 Penny's Hill Edwards Road Cabernet Sauvignon represents outstanding value for a decade-aged, single-vineyard McLaren Vale Cabernet from one of South Australia's most respected family estates. McLaren Vale Cabernet of this quality and provenance is consistently undervalued relative to its Margaret River and Coonawarra counterparts — making this a compelling buy for the wine lover who wants serious Cabernet at an accessible price point.
