2017 Domaine A Stoney Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon
8-Year-Old Tasmanian Cabernet from Australia's Most Celebrated Cool-Climate Cabernet Producer
The 2017 Domaine A Stoney Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon is the little brother of Domaine A's iconic flagship Cabernet — wonderfully characterful, enduring, and brimming with all the fragrance of the lavender that lines this extraordinary Coal River Valley vineyard. Now 8 years old and built to live for decades, this is Tasmanian Cabernet at its most compelling: compact, precise, and possessed of a long-enduring framework that sets it apart from anything produced on the Australian mainland.
My Wine Man on Domaine A
Domaine A was established by Peter and Ruth Althaus in 1973 in the Coal River Valley — one of Tasmania's warmest and driest sub-regions, and the only part of the island capable of producing Cabernet Sauvignon of genuine depth and complexity. Peter Althaus is widely regarded as Australia's greatest Cabernet Sauvignon producer outside of Margaret River, and Domaine A's flagship Cabernet is one of the most celebrated and collected wines in the country. The Stoney Vineyard is the estate's second label — a Bordeaux blend of real character and regional identity, hand harvested and matured for 24 months in seasoned French oak. A wine of extraordinary provenance at an accessible price.
Tasting Notes
Brimming with all the fragrance of the lavender that lines this vineyard. A vintage of compact, crunchy blackcurrants backed with a long-enduring framework of firm, fine tannins, dark chocolate oak, and a lingering acid line. One of the greats — and now boasting screw cap for the first time, set to live for decades.
Style & Drinking Window
Medium to full-bodied with firm, fine tannins and a precise, structured character. Drinking well now with decanting and will continue to develop through 2035–2040. Decant for 1–2 hours to allow the wine to fully open up. Built for the long haul.
