2023 Torbreck Old Vines Grenache Shiraz Mourvedre
Old-Vine Barossa GSM — Three Grapes, One Seamless Blend
My Wine Man on Torbreck
Torbreck was founded by David Powell in 1994 with a clear mission: to preserve and showcase the Barossa Valley’s extraordinary old-vine vineyards. The Old Vines GSM is built from some of the region’s most mature Grenache, Shiraz and Mourvèdre plantings — vines that naturally produce low yields and intensely concentrated fruit.
This is a classic Rhône-style blend interpreted through the lens of the Barossa: generous, expressive and fruit-driven, yet anchored by structure and savoury detail. Grenache provides lift and brightness, Shiraz adds depth and dark fruit weight, while Mourvèdre contributes spice, earthiness and length.
Tasting Notes
Dark cherry, blackberry and ripe plum lead the profile, layered with liquorice, dried herbs, spice and subtle earthy complexity. The palate is medium to full-bodied with a juicy core of fruit, supported by fine tannins and balanced acidity. Each variety plays its role — Grenache for freshness, Shiraz for richness, Mourvèdre for structure and savoury depth — finishing long, smooth and balanced.
Food Pairing
A GSM blend of this character calls for richly flavoured, well-cooked meat. We love it with Sher Wagyu Ribeye M5 Steak from My Meat Man — where the natural fat, char and depth of flavour match the wine’s dark fruit, spice and savoury backbone.
It also works beautifully with slow-roasted lamb shoulder or grilled lamb chops, where the herbs and richness echo the wine’s Grenache and Mourvèdre-driven complexity.
Why This Is a Smart Buy
At HK$149, this delivers genuine old-vine Barossa GSM character from one of the region’s most respected producers. Torbreck’s focus on ancient vineyards ensures depth, concentration and authenticity that consistently outperform the price point.
It’s a reliable, food-friendly red that offers both immediate enjoyment and short-term cellaring potential.
