2022 Turkey Flat Barossa Valley Shiraz
Barossa Shiraz from Vines Planted in 1847 — One of the Oldest Continuously Farmed Vineyards in the World
The 2022 Turkey Flat Barossa Valley Shiraz is a wine of extraordinary provenance — sourced from Shiraz vines planted in 1847 on the Turkey Flat estate in the Barossa Valley, making them among the oldest continuously farmed Shiraz vines in the world. Sinewy, structured, and brooding, this is a wine that carries the weight of nearly 180 years of vine history in every glass.
My Wine Man on Turkey Flat
Turkey Flat has been farmed by the Schulz family since 1865, when Johann Friedrich Schulz purchased the property and its already-established Shiraz vines. The estate is one of the Barossa's most celebrated and historic — a producer that has been quietly making benchmark Barossa Shiraz for generations while the valley's newer names have come and gone. Old vines produce tiny yields of intensely flavoured fruit with a depth and complexity that younger vines simply cannot replicate, and Turkey Flat's 1847 Shiraz vines are among the finest examples of this principle anywhere in the world.
Tasting Notes
Sinewy and chewy-tannined, slick with plush black cherry, blackberry, and dark plum fruits along with hints of clove and dark spice, coal dust, olive tapenade, liquorice, dark chocolate, and earth. Plenty of structure and muscle on the palate with a broody aspect to the deep cassis-like fruit as it slowly retreats from view. A wine that demands patience and rewards it magnificently.
Food Pairing
An 1847-vine, sinewy Barossa Shiraz like this demands the finest beef. We love it with Australian Grass-Fed Cape Grim Rib-Eye Steak from My Meat Man — dry-aged and char-grilled medium-rare with bone-marrow butter, the wine’s black cherry, blackberry, liquorice, coal dust and chewy old-vine tannins are a magnificent match for the rich marbling and char of the ribeye.
Why This Is a Smart Buy
At HK$329, the Turkey Flat Barossa Shiraz delivers 1847-vine provenance from one of the Barossa's most historic family estates at a price that makes it genuinely accessible. Nearly 180 years of vine history, the Schulz family's generational commitment to quality, and a wine of real depth and character.
