97 Points James Halliday — A Clare Valley Legend in Every Bottle

My Wine Man on Wendouree

Few names in Australian wine carry the weight of Wendouree. Tucked into the southern end of the Clare Valley, this historic estate has been producing wines of extraordinary depth and longevity since 1895. Under the stewardship of Tony and Lita Brady — and now continuing with the same uncompromising philosophy — Wendouree is one of Australia's most fiercely individual producers. Dry-grown old vines, minimal intervention, and an almost stubborn refusal to chase trends have made Wendouree wines cult objects among serious collectors. Production is tiny, demand is enormous, and bottles rarely make it to the open market. This is the real deal.

Tasting Notes

Deep crimson with a brooding, inky core. The nose opens with dark plum, blackcurrant, and dried herbs, layered with ironstone minerality, cedar, and a whisper of dark chocolate. On the palate, the Cabernet Malbec is structured and serious — dense, chewy tannins frame a core of black fruits, licorice, and earthy complexity. The finish is long, persistent, and utterly compelling. A wine built for the cellar, but already showing its class. 97 Points — James Halliday

Style & Drinking Window

Full-bodied with firm, grippy tannins and excellent natural acidity. This is a wine that rewards patience — best drinking from 2026 through to 2040+. Decant for at least 2–3 hours if opening now to allow the wine to breathe and reveal its full complexity.

Food Pairing

The brooding intensity and structured tannins of the 2021 Wendouree Cabernet Malbec make it a magnificent match for Australian Grass-Fed Lamb Cutlets from My Meat Man. The wine's dark fruit depth, ironstone minerality, and firm tannins are a classic pairing with the sweet, grassy character of grass-fed lamb — whether grilled over charcoal, French-trimmed and roasted with rosemary and garlic, or served as a slow-braised shoulder with herbs. Also outstanding alongside steak and aged hard cheese.

Why This Is a Smart Buy

Wendouree is one of Australia's most allocation-driven producers — bottles simply don't appear on the open market with any regularity. At HK$999, this 97-point Cabernet Malbec represents exceptional value for a wine of this pedigree and cellaring potential. Comparable Clare Valley reds of this quality and provenance regularly command HK$1,500–2,000+ at auction. If you're building a serious cellar, this is a no-brainer.
