95pts James Halliday | Australia's Most Legendary Pinot Noir Producer
The 2021 Bass Phillip Estate Old Vines Pinot Noir is a wine of extraordinary purity and finesse from one of Australia's most revered estates. Phillip Jones has been farming his tiny Gippsland property since 1979, producing Pinot Noir of Burgundian depth and precision that has no equal in the country. The Old Vines is the estate's benchmark expression — and the 2021 is a beautiful example of everything Bass Phillip stands for.
My Wine Man on Bass Phillip
Phillip Jones is a legend. He moved to South Gippsland in the late 1970s, planted his vines by hand, and spent decades quietly making some of the greatest Pinot Noir in the Southern Hemisphere — largely without fanfare. Bass Phillip is allocated, hard to find, and almost never disappoints. If you want to understand what Australian Pinot Noir is truly capable of, this is the bottle to open.
Tasting Notes
Lovely purity of fruit on the nose — raspberries, sliced strawberries, oranges, and hints of cinnamon stick and vanilla. The palate is soft and creamy, medium-bodied, with a wealth of small red berry fruit dancing across the palate. Very fine tannins. Ripe, delicious, and impeccably balanced. 95pts James Halliday.
Style & Drinking Window
Medium-bodied with silky, fine-grained tannins and exceptional purity. Drinking beautifully now and will continue to develop through 2030–2033. Decant for 30–45 minutes, or open and allow to breathe in the glass.
Why This Is a Smart Buy
At HK$669, Bass Phillip Estate Old Vines is one of the most sought-after and allocated Pinot Noirs in Australia. Production is tiny, demand is high, and bottles rarely appear on the secondary market at anything close to release price. With 95pts Halliday and Phillip Jones's unmatched track record, this is a wine that belongs in any serious cellar.
