2020 Nautilus Marlborough Chardonnay
A Cool-Climate Marlborough Chardonnay from One of New Zealand's Most Respected Family Estates
My Wine Man on Nautilus
Nautilus Estate has been producing wines of exceptional quality from Marlborough since 1985, backed by the Smith family of Yalumba — one of Australia's oldest and most respected wine dynasties. That pedigree matters. Nautilus brings genuine winemaking expertise and a Burgundian sensibility to Marlborough fruit, crafting wines that are precise, textural and built to last. Marlborough is famous for Sauvignon Blanc, but in the right hands it produces Chardonnay of real elegance and cool-climate precision. Nautilus is one of the producers that understands this best — and the 2020 Chardonnay is a compelling example of what this region can do with the variety.
Tasting Notes
Pale golden in the glass with a bright, inviting hue. The nose is refined and expressive — white peach, nectarine and citrus zest lead, with subtle toasty oak, creamy lees and a fine mineral thread running underneath. On the palate, it's medium-bodied with a silky, textural feel. The fruit is precise and focused, supported by natural acidity and a long, elegant finish. There's real complexity here without any heaviness — the hallmark of well-made cool-climate Chardonnay.
Style & Drinking Window
Medium-bodied with a refined, elegant structure. Barrel fermentation and lees ageing add texture and complexity without weight. Fresh acidity keeps the wine lifted and food-friendly. Drinking beautifully now and will continue to develop over the next 2–3 years. No decanting required — simply chill to 10–12°C and serve. Drinking window: 2024–2027.
Food Pairing
A wonderfully versatile food wine. Pair with grilled salmon, pan-seared seafood, roast chicken with lemon and herbs, creamy pasta, or a well-curated cheese board. Also excellent alongside lightly spiced Asian dishes or as a sophisticated aperitif.
