2019 Mastrojanni Rosso di Montalcino
95pts Robert Parker | The Entry Point to One of Montalcino's Finest Estates
The 2019 Mastrojanni Rosso di Montalcino is a wine of extraordinary quality for its category — rich, evenly concentrated, and ultimately more accessible than many of its peers, yet carrying the unmistakable character of one of Tuscany's most celebrated estates. With 95pts from Robert Parker, this is Rosso di Montalcino at its finest.
My Wine Man on Mastrojanni
Mastrojanni is one of Montalcino's most revered producers, farming their estate on the southern slopes of the hill with a commitment to expressing the terroir of this extraordinary appellation. The Rosso di Montalcino is the estate's entry-level Sangiovese — made from younger vines and aged for a shorter period than the Brunello, but carrying the same DNA and the same meticulous winemaking philosophy. Think of it as Brunello for those who don't want to wait.
Tasting Notes
A pretty bouquet with dark fruit and something exotic — camphor ash, wood fire ash, garrigue, and dried herb. Rich and evenly concentrated on the palate with fine chalk on the tannins and good phenolic ripeness, with no green bitterness. This village bottling does a great job and is ultimately more accessible than many of its peers. 95pts Robert Parker.
Style & Drinking Window
Medium to full-bodied with fine chalky tannins and a savoury, herb-driven character. Drinking beautifully now and will continue to develop through 2028–2030. Decant for 45 minutes to 1 hour to open up the aromatics.
Food Pairing
A 95-point Rosso di Montalcino with this herb-driven Tuscan character deserves a classic, refined pairing. We love it with Australian Grass-Fed Lamb Cutlets from My Meat Man — quickly grilled with rosemary, garlic and olive oil, the tender cutlets are a magnificent match for Mastrojanni's dark fruit, garrigue and chalky Sangiovese tannins. A Tuscan pairing in everything but postcode.
