2018 Domaine du Grand Tinel Chateauneuf-du-Pape
A Legendary Vintage from One of Châteauneuf-du-Pape's Most Respected Family Estates
My Wine Man on Domaine du Grand Tinel
Domaine du Grand Tinel is one of the most respected and authentic family estates in Châteauneuf-du-Pape — a domaine with deep roots in the appellation, producing wines that are true to the traditions and terroir of the southern Rhône. The estate's vineyards are planted across the classic galets roulés — the large, heat-retaining rounded stones that are the defining feature of the appellation's finest sites — and the blend is built around old-vine Grenache, complemented by Syrah, Mourvèdre, Counoise, and up to 12 other permitted varieties. After 24 months of maturation in oak barrel, the wine emerges with the richness, complexity, and spice that defines great Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The 2018 vintage is widely regarded as one of the greatest in the appellation's modern history — a year of extraordinary concentration, depth, and longevity across the southern Rhône.
Tasting Notes
The 2018 Grand Tinel is a wine of real richness, warmth, and southern Rhône character. Deep garnet-ruby in the glass, it opens with complex aromas of wild herbs, cedar, and black pepper — the garrigue of Provence in a glass — layered with ample fruit of cherry, strawberry, and prune. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and generous, with the 24 months of oak maturation softening the power into a wine of genuine harmony and depth. The spicy character is persistent and compelling, and the finish is long, warm, and satisfying. A wine that rewards the table and the cellar in equal measure.
Style & Drinking Window
Full-bodied with the warmth, richness, and spice of classic Châteauneuf-du-Pape. A natural food wine — ideal with fuller-flavoured red meats, game, roast duck, rich stews, or strong aged cheeses. Decant for one to two hours. Drinking well now with 7 years of bottle age, and will continue to develop through 2030–2036.
