2018 Bird in Hand Syrah
Cool-Climate Adelaide Hills Syrah — Northern Rhône Style, 7 Years of Bottle Age
The 2018 Bird in Hand Syrah is a wine that deliberately steps away from the big Australian Shiraz style — cool-climate Adelaide Hills fruit, restrained extraction, and a Northern Rhône-inspired approach that prioritises perfume, freshness and finesse over power.
My Wine Man on Bird in Hand
Bird in Hand is one of the Adelaide Hills' most respected estates, named after a 19th-century gold mine on the property. The Syrah is the more elegant, perfumed sister to their fuller-bodied Shiraz — picked earlier, fermented with a higher proportion of whole bunches, and matured in older French oak for restraint rather than richness.
Tasting Notes
Medium crimson with vibrant aromatics. White pepper, blueberry, dark cherry, violets, dried herbs and a fine mineral thread. The palate is medium-bodied with fine, silky tannins and a long, peppery finish of remarkable elegance.
Style & Drinking Window
Medium-bodied cool-climate Syrah with peppery character and silky tannins. Drinking beautifully now and through 2030. Decant 30 minutes.
Food Pairing
A cool-climate Syrah with peppery, savoury character pairs beautifully with lamb. We love it with Australian Grass-Fed Lamb Backstrap from My Meat Man — pan-seared rare with rosemary, garlic and a crack of black pepper, a magnificent match for the Bird in Hand Syrah's peppery, cool-climate character.
