2017 Dog Point Marlborough Pinot Noir 1.5 Litre
Marlborough's Most Celebrated Pinot Noir — Eight Years Old, In Magnum
The 2017 Dog Point Marlborough Pinot Noir 1.5 Litre is a wine with all the markings of a long-lived Marlborough Pinot Noir — and in magnum format, with eight years of bottle age already behind it, that promise is now being fulfilled. Dog Point is one of New Zealand's most revered producers, and this magnum is a serious cellaring proposition and a spectacular gift for anyone who understands what great Pinot Noir looks like.
My Wine Man on Dog Point
Dog Point was founded in 2002 by Ivan Sutherland and James Healy — both former senior winemakers at Cloudy Bay, the estate that put Marlborough on the world wine map. When they left to establish their own label, they brought with them decades of experience farming Marlborough's finest vineyards and an intimate understanding of what the region's soils and climate can produce. Dog Point quickly established itself as one of Marlborough's benchmark producers, making wines of greater depth, complexity, and longevity than the region is typically associated with. The Pinot Noir is the wine that best demonstrates their ambition.
Tasting Notes
Deep ruby in the glass, with perfumed aromas of bright violet and red berry fruits, supported by dried herb, characteristic brown spice, and a complex smokiness. The palate delivers a dense core of juicy fruit with bold, fine-grained, ripe tannins. A fresh thread of fine acidity emerges and carries the intense flavours through the palate, finishing very long. Eight years of bottle age in magnum has added a layer of complexity and integration that makes this wine sing.
Style & Drinking Window
Medium to full-bodied with fine-grained tannins and a long, complex finish. At peak now and drinking magnificently — decant for one hour. In magnum, this wine will continue to develop through 2032 and beyond. A wine worth cellaring further.
