2016 John Duval Entity Shiraz 1.5 Litre
James Halliday 97 Points | Nine Years of Age, Decades Still Ahead — In Magnum
The 2016 John Duval Entity Shiraz 1.5 Litre is a wine built for the long haul — 97 points from James Halliday, nine years of bottle age already behind it, and decades of development still ahead. In magnum format, that trajectory is even more compelling. This is not a wine to open lightly. It is a wine to acquire, to cellar, and to open on an occasion that deserves it.
My Wine Man on John Duval
For 16 years, John Duval was the chief winemaker of Penfolds — the custodian of Grange, Australia's most iconic wine. When he left to establish his own label in 2003, the wine world paid close attention. Entity is his flagship Shiraz: old-vine fruit from across the Eden Valley and Barossa Valley, open-fermented with submerged cap, and matured in French hogsheads in a style that Halliday himself describes as resonating with oak — a la Grange. The 2016 is 60% Barossa Valley and 40% Eden Valley — a blend that delivers both the depth and warmth of the Barossa floor and the spice and lift of the higher-altitude Eden Valley.
Tasting Notes
Deeply coloured and at once full-bodied and elegant — not a common marriage in young red wines, and a testament to the quality of the old-vine fruit and John Duval's winemaking precision. The flavours are all black: blackberry, blackcurrant, black cherry, earth, and liquorice, with ripe tannins from the old vines and a resonant oak presence that echoes the Grange philosophy. Fifteen months in 33% new French hogsheads has added structure and complexity without overwhelming the fruit. 97pts James Halliday.
Style & Drinking Window
Full-bodied with ripe, structured tannins and exceptional depth and length. In magnum, the 2016 Entity is developing with extraordinary grace — nine years of bottle age has softened the edges and integrated the oak, but the wine still has decades of development ahead. Decant for two to three hours. A serious cellaring proposition of the highest order.
Food Pairing
A 97-point magnum of ex-Grange-winemaker Shiraz deserves the finest beef. We love it with Australian Grass-Fed Cape Grim Rib-Eye Steak from My Meat Man — dry-aged and char-grilled medium-rare with bone-marrow butter, the rich marbling and beefy depth are a magnificent match for Entity's black fruits, liquorice, and resonant Grange-style oak. A pairing built for a long, celebratory table.
Why This Is a Smart Buy
