2016 Epsilon Shiraz
A Barossa Valley Gem from One of South Australia's Most Exciting Boutique Producers
My Wine Man on Epsilon
Epsilon is a boutique Barossa Valley producer with a singular focus: to craft Shiraz of genuine depth, character, and regional expression from some of the valley's most distinguished old-vine sites. Drawing on fruit from low-yielding Barossa vineyards with deep, ancient soils, Epsilon produces wines that capture the essence of what makes Barossa Shiraz so compelling — rich, concentrated fruit, natural warmth, and a structural backbone that rewards cellaring. The 2016 vintage was an outstanding year in the Barossa, delivering a long, warm growing season with excellent fruit ripeness and natural concentration. Now approaching a decade of bottle age, the 2016 Epsilon Shiraz has developed beautifully into a wine of real complexity and depth.
Tasting Notes
Deep ruby-crimson with a purple hue. The bouquet is rich and inviting — dark plum, blackberry, and blueberry layered with dark chocolate, mocha, and a whisper of well-integrated oak spice. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied with generous, ripe tannins and a warm, enveloping mouthfeel that is quintessentially Barossa. Flavours of dark berry fruit, licorice, and savoury spice flow through to a long, warming finish with excellent persistence. A classic Barossa Shiraz that is drinking beautifully now.
Style & Drinking Window
Full-bodied and generously structured, the 2016 Epsilon Shiraz is a wine of classic Barossa character — rich, warm, and deeply satisfying. Now approaching its prime drinking window after nearly a decade of cellaring, the tannins have softened into a plush, integrated frame that carries the wine's fruit concentration with ease. Drink now through 2028. Decant for 30–45 minutes to allow the full aromatic complexity to unfold. Serve at 17–19°C.
Food Pairing
The rich dark fruit, mocha depth, and generous tannin structure of the 2016 Epsilon Shiraz make it a wonderful match for Luv-a-Duck Fresh Duck Breast Fillets from My Meat Man. The wine's dark berry intensity and savoury spice complement the rich, gamey character of duck breast beautifully — whether pan-seared with a cherry reduction, roasted with five spice, or served with a classic orange and red wine sauce.
Why This Is a Smart Buy
At HK$128, the 2016 Epsilon Shiraz represents outstanding value for a nearly decade-aged Barossa Shiraz from a quality-focused boutique producer. Barossa Shiraz of this depth and character at this price point is increasingly rare — making this a compelling buy for the wine lover who wants serious, food-friendly red wine without the premium price tag. This is everyday drinking at its most satisfying.
