2015 Pieropan Vigna Garzon Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG
A Single-Vineyard Amarone from One of Veneto's Most Storied Estates — 10 Years of Bottle Age, At Peak Maturity
The 2015 Pieropan Vigna Garzon Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG is a single-vineyard expression of one of Italy's most iconic wine styles, from a family estate that has shaped the modern face of Veneto wine. Now with 10 years of bottle age, the wine is drinking at peak — the appassimento richness and concentration fully resolved into a finish of remarkable freshness and complexity.
My Wine Man on Pieropan
Pieropan is one of the Veneto's most respected and historically significant family estates — founded in 1880 by Leonildo Pieropan and now in the fourth generation, with brothers Andrea and Dario at the helm. The family is widely credited with revitalising the Soave Classico region in the 20th century, and their wines are benchmarks not just for Veneto but for Italy as a whole.
The Vigna Garzon is the estate's single-vineyard Amarone — sourced from a specific parcel in the Valpolicella zone, with the Corvina, Corvinone and Rondinella grapes dried in the traditional fruttai for around 100 days before fermentation and extended ageing in large oak casks. This is Amarone made with the same precision and respect for terroir that has made Pieropan one of the great names of northeastern Italy.
The 2015 vintage is widely regarded as one of the finest Amarone vintages of the decade — and at 10 years of age, it is now drinking magnificently.
Tasting Notes
Intense and deep ruby red in the glass. The nose is characterful and complex — black cherries, plums and blackberry jam at the core, layered with dark chocolate, leather and toasted coffee, lifted by a complex spiciness of black pepper, cinnamon, juniper berries and cloves, all carried to a refreshing balsamic finish.
On the palate, the wine is complex and rounded, with a powerful structure and a lovely freshness on the long finish. A wine of genuine character and great ageing potential, now at a magnificent point in its evolution.
Food Pairing
A single-vineyard Amarone of this depth and character deserves an equally serious cut. We love it with Grass Fed White Stripe Premium Lamb Rack Frenched Cap from My Meat Man — herb-crusted, medium-rare, the precise iron-rich character of a frenched lamb rack matches the Pieropan's black cherry, leather and balsamic complexity, while the rack's refined cut is a worthy partner to the wine's powerful structure and long, balsamic finish. Equally good with game dishes, slow-braised meat and powerfully flavoured aged cheeses.
