2023 Dog Point Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc
Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc for Those Who Want More Than Tropical Fruit
My Wine Man on Dog Point
Dog Point is one of Marlborough's most respected and quietly influential wine estates — founded in 2002 by James Healy and Ivan Sutherland, two of the key figures behind Cloudy Bay's rise to global prominence. Having helped build one of the world's most recognised wine brands, they left to do something more personal: farm their own organically grown vineyards and make wines of genuine precision, restraint, and site expression. The result is a Sauvignon Blanc that deliberately steps away from the exuberant, tropical style that defines much of Marlborough, and instead focuses on tension, minerality, and a dry, structured character that makes it one of the most food-friendly and intellectually satisfying expressions of the variety in New Zealand. This is Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc for those who think they've outgrown Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc.
Tasting Notes
Bright pale straw in the glass, with a nose that is focused and precise rather than immediately exuberant. Pink grapefruit, lemon zest, and green melon lead, with a subtle mineral backbone, fresh herbs, and a delicate stone fruit note adding quiet complexity. On the palate, the wine is dry and structured — the acidity is bright and energising, the texture has a slight grip that adds definition and length, and the finish is clean, precise, and satisfying. Less tropical, more mineral. Less obvious, more interesting.
Style & Drinking Window
Light to medium-bodied with citrus, grapefruit, and subtle mineral notes. Bright acidity and textural tension give it precision, structure, and a clean, dry finish. Drinking beautifully now for its freshness and energy, and will hold well over the next 1–2 years. Serve well-chilled at 8–10°C. No decanting required.
Food Pairing
The wine's dry, structured character makes it a particularly versatile food wine. Outstanding with fresh seafood — oysters, grilled prawns, and sashimi are natural matches. Also excellent with salmon with a citrus dressing, goat's cheese, Vietnamese spring rolls, and light chicken dishes with herbs or lemon. The wine's mineral tension and dry finish make it a more considered pairing partner than most Sauvignon Blancs.
