Margaret River's Founding Estate

Cape Mentelle was established in 1970 by David Hohnen — one of the pioneers who proved that Margaret River could produce world-class Cabernet Sauvignon. More than five decades later, the estate remains one of the region's defining names, and the flagship Cabernet Sauvignon remains the wine by which Cape Mentelle is ultimately judged. The 2017 vintage is a compelling chapter in that story.

James Halliday 95 Points

The 2017 growing season in Margaret River was cool and wet — conditions that might have challenged lesser producers, but here produced a wine that is ripe, rich, and possessed of remarkable nuance. The red fruit on the palate has both density and power, yet is softened by a leafy, floral character that speaks directly to the vintage's cool conditions. Clove bud and aniseed lace together through a finish of exceptional length — the ultimate testament to quality.

91 Days on Skins

The winemaking here is uncompromising. Hand-picked fruit spent up to 91 days on skins — an extraordinary commitment that extracts every dimension of colour, tannin, and flavour the vintage has to offer. The wine was then matured for 18 months in predominantly French oak (10% Hungarian) with 58% new barrels. The oak is making a significant presence right now, but the tannins remain fine and the structure is built for the long haul.
